Blue Huni Kuin Bracelet
Kaxinawá weaving, as the Huni Kuin are also known, is made of cotton and colored with jenipapo (fruit) ink. The master of weaving and also of ritual chants is called ainbu keneya, “woman with pattern” or txsana ibu ainbu “mistress of the japins”. The japim is a bird that builds elaborate nests and imitates the songs of other birds and animals.
Legend has it that it was the jiboia-type snake, Sidika, who taught women the art of weaving and body painting, while the anaconda Yube taught men the art of rope and its songs, the world of transforming images . Each chart (kene) can be opened to reveal any type of figuration (dami), because within the snake design there are many hidden worlds. The graphic arts of this ethnic group are closely intertwined with the visionary experience of the ropes (nixi pae), which produces visions.
